This long cycle is broken down into smaller 12 year cycles. This is how long it takes to get through all of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac before they repeat. The twelve year cycle is based on ancient observations of Jupiter's orbit. They divided this circle into twelve sections, each of which is assigned to one of the animals of the zodiac. The Chinese Zodiac calendar uses aspects of both the solar calendar and the lunar calendar.

Each of the Chinese zodiac animals represents a year and those born in that year will have certain personality characteristics corresponding to that animal. The cycle begins with the Rat, and then proceeds through the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Sheep, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog and the Pig.

A popular legend on the origins of the Chinese zodiac says that Buddha sent out invitations to all the animals to come visit him. When the appointed day arrived, only twelve turned up. Buddha named the twelve years after these animals in the order that they arrived. Another version of the legend recounts that these animals were in a race to get there.

Chinese Astrology Signs Compatibility

In the Chinese zodiac, it is common for animals within four years of each other to get along. For example the Rat should be fairly compatible with the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Pig, the Dog, the Rooster and the Monkey. These animals are the four preceding and the four following Rat's place in the Chinese zodiac. Animals that are opposite on the zodiac are usually not very compatible, such as the Rat and the Snake.
